COVERING LABOR: WRITING ABOUT WORKERS & CLASS POLITICS
Sidney Award Winner Dan Kaufman
About the Event
PAST EVENT: Wednesday, September 30, 2026 from 3 to 4:15 p.m.
Lee Hills Hall, 715 Elm Street, Columbia, MO 65211. Room 303
Whether one is covering the presidential election or an automotive strike, this workshop will discuss different strategies for pitching and writing narratives centered on ordinary workers. To do this, journalist and author Dan Kaufman will give a brief overview of American labor history and provide resources for learning more about that history. Then he’ll delve into several stories he wrote about labor law, strikes, plant shutdowns, deindustrialization, and class politics for the New Yorker and the New York Times Magazine that will hopefully spark your own ideas about covering a crucially important subject that affects virtually the entire population.
